The Power of Persistence

The Power of Persistence

Persistence is defined as - firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. Simply put, it’s GRIT. It’s the ability to always move forward.

Many people set goals, but for whatever reason, fail in the face of adversity or setback. So, how do you develop that grit and stay on track? It takes a tough mindset and discipline. Here are some steps to consider:

Identify goals
This entails not only documenting the BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal), but also the mini-goals that you must meet along the way. Crushing small goals is satisfying and key to keeping you in the mindset to persevere.

Find out what motivates you
This is very personal. Reflect on times when you were motivated and excited to tackle tasks. Tap into that.

Come up with a plan
A goal without a plan is just a wish! It’s not enough to simply state a goal. What steps will you take to get there? Be specific.

Stay positive
Don’t let negative self-talk or a defeatist attitude affect your progress. If you fail, look at the experience as a gift (lessons learned) and get excited about overcoming.

Cultivate discipline and habit
Discipline and habits are what carry you through when motivation wanes. Make certain habits absolutely non-negotiable.

Simple enough? For some, yes. For others, you really need to work at it. Don’t give up!
