Planning New Year's Resolutions? Read This!

As 2024 comes to a close, thousands - if not millions - of people are undoubtedly planning their “new year, new me.”

I’ve always thought, “if you want to make a change, then do it.” January 1 holds no magic.

In fact, it’s been documented that over 80% of resolutions fail before February.

Why?

When we set resolutions, motivation is high! But optimism and motivation aren’t enough to drive you. These are both emotions that come and go. And when we don’t stick to our resolutions, self-esteem can take a hit.

Some resolutions are too big. And while it’s great to have big goals, a more successful approach is to set smaller goals and make sustainable habits a little at a time. These will support your big goal.

Most resolutions are either too vague, require too much change (making a 180) or neglect the “why.”

So, if you have some changes you want to make in 2025 - or any time - remember:

  • Be specific.
  • Think not only about the behaviors you want to change but the habits you have that can undermine you.
  • Think small. Small goals support the ultimate goals.
  • Remember your why. Dig in and get to the essence of why you want to change.

Remember, change is hard. But it’s not impossible if you set yourself up for success.
